First impressions – Ben Mallon’s blog from Week 1 in DC

Ben Mallon looks back on his orientation week, and ahead to his internship and the rest of  Summer 2012 in DC.

Having arrived in Washington Dc, having met our host families and ‘adjusting’ to the scorching hot weather of the USA- here begins the summer! I have no doubt that the next 8 weeks will be filled with plenty of challenges, trials and tribulations… but more importantly it shall see the continued professional development of 30 young leaders from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Having already met my WIP peers I have no doubt that we shall all learn from one another and all make positive change back home through the skills that we’ve all gained through the program. I’m guessing that this week shall see us all thrown into DC life at the deep end. Having looked at the agenda we have meetings with Patrick Burke (DC Police Chief), Congressman Jim Walsh, an International Development Panel, in addition to training with Accenture. If this week is anything to go by, I am in no doubt that the following weeks shall be intense, thought-provoking yet tiring!

So here it goes! 7 weeks in Washington DC, one week in New York, Interning at the Northern Ireland Bureau, meetings with Government Officials and Civil Society Leaders!
